I wrote these three poems thanks to my Creative Writing class during a particularly stressful time in college. They weren't for an assignment, and they weren't intended to be go together as a narrative either, but I can't quite hold just one without the others because they all came from the same idea.
Throughout the Bible, there is a fascinating numerology that ascribes meanings to nearly every number. I discovered the meanings of some numbers in a Bible Study on Exodus, and it absolutely blew me away by how much subtext and meaning they offered. I challenged myself to pick some numbers and write acrostics that conveyed their meanings, their titles being one-word definitions. The English poems allude to some personal experiences like repetitive bus rides and trouble sleeping. The other I wrote in Spanish because I had trouble fitting the number's meaning into just three lines of English, and it turned out to rhyme too, which was a happy accident!
TRIAL
Sep. 29, ’21
Forty days and nights without sleep,
Over and over in bed and in your head.
Rough doesn’t even cut it.
The teacher is silent during exams, but
Your questions may yet be answered.
SET APART
Sep. 29, ’21
Too many same, extinguished faces on the bus.
History’s cycles circle
Infinitely greater than you’ll ever be.
Run away, but from what and to whom?
Today, choose to believe
Your individuality is part of something bigger than you’ll ever be.
PERFECCIÓN
Sep. 28, ’21
Te ve que estas luchando por valía.
Entonces, mira a la Persona quien es ya.
Nadar a Hogar. ¡Hogar te alienta!
*Translation:
PERFECTION
He sees that you're fighting for worth.
Then, look to the Person who is already.
Swim Home. Home is cheering you on!
Can you see what numbers I used? Can you find places where these numbers show up in the Bible?
I hope you liked these and that they gave you some food for thought. I encourage you to try writing your own Hebrew numeral acrostics too if you're looking for a poetic challenge.
Much thanks!
